We all love outcomes, but focusing on outcomes can wear you down. Life is full of emotions. Riding the rollercoaster of ups and downs can be tiring. You feel the initial high of starting an online business. You also see some small wins, but then you experience a long stretch without progress.

Now what?

You can either do two things. You can continue or find something else to feel the initial high of starting a news business venture. There is a time to pivot, and there is a time to dig deep, create a strategy, and write through it.

I love everything about the writing process because I view writing as my primary occupation. I love being able to set my work hours. I love reading books, taking notes, outlining, and then writing my draft.

I love creating digital products.

My workplace is at my desk, just a few feet from my bed. I set up my room like an office. My desk feels like a work office. The difference now is that I answer to no one. I don’t have a boss. The boss is me. I am the CEO of my company.

There are certain procedures you follow at your workplace because that is part of your job. You arrive at the office, check your email, and review the agenda in the morning before starting your work.

View your writing business in the same way. It’s your job, and you are the CEO of your company. Your work hours are different from your 9-to-5 job, but it’s still a job - it’s your writing business.

Treat your writing business like you would at your 9-to-5 job. You should treat it better than your 9-to-5 job, because you have a vested interest in your business. You are the CEO.

Fall in Love With the Process

My most productive time of day is from 9 pm to midnight. But now that I'll have more time, being a retired teacher, I spend my mornings reading, taking notes, and conducting the research I need to write my Substack newsletter.

I work from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.

I take a break for several hours to work in my yard to make sure I get in yard work daily. I recently built a BBQ grill in my backyard because I was tired of the store grills always breaking. I make time during the day to do other things to take a break from my writing business.

My mid-afternoons are usually spent going into town, running errands, and going to the store. I return home in the evening, eat dinner, and spend the rest of the night on my writing business.

I’m still waiting for my business license, so I won’t start my other sales business until June. But everything else is set. I treat my writing business like a business because it is, in fact, a business.

Here Is What I Do

It’s all a matter of mindset. Focus on your business like a business because it is a business. Your focus needs to change. It’s no longer a hobby. It’s a business. The income you are currently earning has no part in how you view your business.
