What helped me write consistently online again is my day job
I returned to math tutoring as a side job
I know what to write on Medium, NewsBreak (NB), and my other math blog platform, but I’m unsure what to write on Substack. I’ve recently discovered that writing about anything and not niche down on writing is less stressful. I recently joined NB and write about restaurant reviews, fun facts, and historical events in my area. I don’t worry about things to write about on NB and Medium. Several items I added to my plate keep me writing online. It has helped me continue writing online.
Things I did to help my writing consistently online
1. I started tutoring as a second income again. Things I hear, see, and experience at my second job gives me writing ideas.
2. I write on Medium, NewsBreak, Substack, and my math blog.
3. I don’t worry about my writing income because tutoring gives me extra money to supplement my income. I can write with no expectations.
4. I view writing online as a marathon. I earn little money now, but the potential to make money exists.
5. I moved away from writing fiction short stories because Medium doesn’t pay fiction writers well. However, writing fiction short stories on Medium has given me a new outlook and energy about writing.
Takeaway
My math tutoring as my second job has removed the pressure for me to write to earn money to supplement my teaching job. I now write and enjoy the writing process.
Writing tip
Don’t quit your day job! In my case, having multiple incomes have helped me to write without making writing a significant income earner. The added stress of writing caused burnout. I don’t have that stress anymore. I write with no expectations. I’m building my writing portfolio for the long haul.
Final Thought
I returned to writing for the sake of writing. I find writing more enjoyable, and writing prompts flow more freely without the added stress of earning money from writing. I want to make money from writing, but I know I’ll have to build it around my day job.
