It was trial and error for me. I wrote in the void for years before I started making money online. I thought Medium would make me the money I needed to concentrate on other projects while earning a steady income from one platform.
I never thought I would make a nice income from NewsBreak, but writing about everything happening in my state was the ticket. I started writing about restaurant reviews and comfort foods and made money. But when I began writing about the issues facing the people in my state, that is when my writing income took off.
I also learned to research and read to write about topics again. I now take several days to complete an article on NewsBreak.
That’s the first prong in my writing business. Find something that gives me a steady writing income.
The second is creating a newsletter business. I’m building a newsletter business through Substack and eventually convertkit. Of the three prongs, the newsletter business takes the longest but has the most upside because I would have my audience compared to depending on an algorithm.
Substack is still a work in progress.
The last prong is my books on KDP on Amazon and Draft2Digital. I have six mathematics workbooks that are currently making money every month. It’s not much, but I’m earning something for marketing next to nothing for the previous two years.
I’m also completing my short fiction book and starting on my memoir, which will be completed when I retire from teaching.
Final Thoughts
Somewhere in all of this is copywriting. I want to try my hand at copywriting. It took me several years to figure out my course of action with writing and making money.
I’m not sure if Medium will be part of my writing future, but it is where I started. I’ll forever be grateful for Medium because it gave me a starting point to begin my writing business.
Thank you for being part of my writing journey.

I too have wondered about copywriting - I'd be interested in knowing how it works out!
